Your Birth, God's Way Blog/Pregnancy/Is Home Birth Really Scary? Understanding Fear and Familiarity

Prefer to listen? Here's the audio!

Okay. Everything that is new seems scary. Familiarity is what makes things comfortable and less scary. This is true for so many things, and home birth is no different. I get messages from listeners saying they would love to have a birth at home, but their husband isn't really comfortable with it, or maybe they're scared to do it.

So I want to talk to you today about whether home birth is actually scary, or if maybe you're just scared of what you don't know, and your fear is really based on what you've been told, which might not even be true. God is not the author of fear. He tells us to fear not many, many times in His word. So let's get the information and let's move forward fearlessly today. Come on, let's dive in.

Listener Review: Home Birth Inspiration from Canada

My review today is from Dana (or Dana Ruth) from Canada. She left this back in May:
“I always knew I wanted a home birth, but then when it came to getting pregnant, shortly after moving, I didn't feel at home enough in our new home. Listening to Lori's podcast has helped me to realize that there's no place like home is truly true. I can't wait to birth at home. Now with the support of my husband, midwife, and doula in August, I can't wait to hear about your birth.”

Dana, I can't wait to hear about your birth story once it happens! And if you haven’t heard, I’m hosting a home birth prep class starting on July 11th—just in time for you to be ready. You can pre-register at yourbirthgodsway.com/homebirthprep
.
This will be a four-week live course over Zoom, covering everything you need to know to get prepared for your home birth. From ensuring your husband or family feels safe and supportive to preparing your home environment, I’ll walk you through all of it.

What Makes Home Birth Seem Scary?

First, let’s think about what’s scary in life. Things that are unfamiliar, unpredictable, or uncomfortable feel scary. Think back to your first day of kindergarten. Or your first date. Or the first time you drove a car alone. These things seemed scary at first, but became familiar over time. Familiarity is how you overcome fear.

Birth can feel scary for the same reason. Especially if you’ve never experienced it firsthand, or all you’ve seen is Hollywood dramatization or hospital settings that rarely show an undisturbed birth. Most people forming your opinion of birth—obstetricians, nurses, or media—have never witnessed a natural, undisturbed birth. This creates a cultural fear of birth that isn’t based on your own experience.

The Reality of Home Birth

Picture this: your contractions start. They pick up gradually. You carry on with your day—cooking, snuggling your other children, eating a meal. You may let your midwife know, but life goes on. You move, sway, hum, or rest in whatever position feels right because you trust your body and God’s wisdom.

When it’s time, your midwife arrives quietly. She checks on you and your baby, maybe measures your cervix if you want, or just monitors your well-being. She has the skills to intervene if needed, but rarely has to. No machines, needles, or strangers interrupt the flow.

Eventually, your baby arrives. Peaceful. Latching immediately. Placenta emerges naturally. Your midwife leaves after ensuring everyone is safe. You’re curled up with your newborn, secure and content. This is home birth: calm, controlled, prepared, and safe. It is not chaotic, dangerous, or reckless.

Why Home Birth is Normal and Beautiful

Home birth is where birth has happened for all but maybe the last 100 or so years. It is where labor is truly undisturbed, natural, and calm. Most women in our country choose hospitals, but hospitals are not inherently safer—they are often scary and chaotic environments, with life hanging in the balance.

Next week, I’ll contrast home birth with hospital birth, so you can make an informed decision for yourself and your baby.

If today’s post blessed you in any way, head over to Apple Podcasts and leave a five-star review. It’s the best way to support this show and help more mamas find God’s best for their families.

I’ll see you right back here in a few days!
